About the Item

Artwork size: 195x97 cm. Frame size 222x123 cm. Provenance: Private collection Stockholm, Sweden Certificate of authenticity from the Comité Lanskoy in Paris André Lanskoy was born in Moscow in 1902 and died in Paris in 1976. After studies in St. Petersburg and Kiev he moved to the French capital in 1921. Concerning his arrival in Paris he has stated “Literally in the first night I started to paint and I haven’t stopped since.” Passionate about painting he joined l’Académie de la Grande-Chaumière where artists like Alexander Calder and Alberto Giacometti attended. During his early years in Paris, André Lanskoy enjoyed the artistic life with frequent visits to museums and galleries where he developed a close friendship with Serge Poliakoff, Jean-Michel Coulon and later Nicolas de Staël. André Lanskoy started as a figurative painter. In his early still lifes the expressive brushstrokes and colour palette reveal his inspiration and fascination of Vincent van Gogh. His early works were shown at a group exhibition with Russian painters at Galerie La Licorne in 1923. In 1937 André Lanskoy turned more and more to abstract painting and from 1942 he devoted himself completely to abstract expressionism. The following decades came to play a significant part in his life with exhibitions at a number of important galleries such as Galerie Louis Carré in Paris in 1948, Arthur Tooth and Sons Gallery in London in 1953 and in 1959 at the Loeb Gallery in New York. Inspired by Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky André Lanskoy created compositions reflecting the harmony between colour, pattern, rythm and light in abstract landscapes. His work of the 50s and 60s is today the most sought after collectible.
