The Shambles, York
Often described as one of the best-preserved medieval streets in the world, The Shambles is the atmospheric heart of York’s historic city centre. Lined with beautifully preserved, timber-framed buildings that lean in above the narrow lane, some dating back to the 14th Century, the street offers a glimpse into the city's medieval past.
Originally known as The Great Flesh Shambles, this street was once home to the city’s butchers - and some of the original meat hooks and shelves used to display cuts of meat can still be seen on the building fronts today.
Today, The Shambles blends rich history with vibrant modern charm. It's a favourite among visitors for its independent shops, from galleries and gift boutiques to bakeries, bookshops, and artisan eateries.
