About the Item
Colors have long been known to have psychological and emotional effects, and in the past months, using the calming color blue has been a therapeutic self-treatment. Blue is the color of isolation and trust, linked with eternity and the beyond.
The boat evokes a passage. The holding vessel and the deep waters symbolize our first crossing into birth and our last in the ship of death, "leading us back to the swaying, gliding somnolent rhythms of earliest childhood, of the primordial ocean and the night “( Erich Neumann, The Great Mother: An Analysis of the Archetype).
The ladder enables the soul to climb to the hereafter where the ancestors reside. It is a means of ascending or descending to places otherwise inaccessible. In the shamanic traditions of India, Tibet, and Siberia, the ladder has an affinity with bridge, stairway, and tree as an implement for transcending the limits of time and space.(from 'The Book of Symbols')
Angelica’s multi-layered works are informed by her ongoing efforts to create a less reactive and more responsive presence in the world. They act as the muse to meditations on the many facets of surrender, empowerment, reverence, and love that exist in ourselves, and in our relation to a greater whole.
Angelica Bergamini was born in Viareggio (Italy) in 1973. She holds a degree from the Academy of Fine Arts of Florence (Italy) and she has spent long periods of residency in Spain at the University of Granada and at the Museo National Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid.
Bergamini explores the meaning of colors in an open dialogue with human emotions and natural shapes, while her experimental approach manifests through different medias: from painting and paper-cuts assemblages to video and sculptural installations.
Her works have been presented internationally as part of collective shows in New York (Tanja Grunert; White Box; BRIC Arts Media; Photo New York), London (Chelsea space), Paris (Galerie Arnaud Lefebvre), Stockholm (Färgfabriken) and in Hong Kong (Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery), besides being part of several private collections worldwide. Bergamini’s most recent shows include her participation to the “Il volo e`una scrittura del corpo nel cielo” - altered book project: 9 artists for a novel by C.Gagliardo, published by Hacca Edizioni, a project curated by Pietro Gagliano`, first launched at Salone Internazionale del Libro in Turin 2015 (Italy) and at Writers Literary Festival 2016 in Milan. She is currently working on a new video series based on the animation of a selection of her previous works on paper.

Angelica Bergamini
Angelica Bergamini is an Italian born New York-based artist. She spent academic years in Spain at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Granada and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid and graduated with honors in painting from the Fine Academy of Art in Florence, Italy. Since 2006 she has been studying color psychology. Bergamini’s work explores the relationship between the personal and collective unconscious, generating a porosity between aesthetic and ethical values. Cross-cultural studies and interest for philosophy also guide a great part of her creation which manifests through painting and paper-cuts assemblages, video and sculptural installations. In 2012, she was commissioned by the Hyatt Union Square in New York, a site-specific art project, and in 2015, her collaboration with Italian writer Chicca Gagliardo was presented at the Turin International Book Fair. Her works have been part of collective shows in New York (Tanja Grunert Gallery, White Box, and BRIC Arts Media), Los Angeles (Torrance Art Museum), London (Chelsea Space), Paris (Galerie Arnaud Lefebvre), Stockholm (Färgfabriken), Milan (Pari Dispari) and in Hong Kong (Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery). And part of private collections in the USA, Europe, China and Israel. Her most recent solo show was at the Ivy Brown Gallery in New York City. She is currently working on a video series based on the animation of her mixed media on paper, and her latest video will be screened at the 55th Pesaro International Film Festival of New Cinema in Italy in June. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
