About the Item

This rare and visually arresting mid-century modern abstract painting was created circa 1950 by celebrated Denver modernist Angelo Di Benedetto (1913–1992). Executed in acrylic on a shaped, three-dimensional canvas, the work departs from traditional flat painting to function as a hanging mobile, blurring the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Finished on both sides, the piece offers a dynamic 360-degree viewing experience, inviting interaction with space, light, and movement. Rendered in a sophisticated black-on-black palette, the composition reveals richly textured surfaces and subtle tonal variation, creating depth through shadow and form rather than color. The circular, sculptural structure reflects Di Benedetto’s pioneering interest in geometry, spirituality, and kinetic abstraction—hallmarks of his postwar artistic vision. Measuring approximately 22 ¾ inches in diameter with a 9-inch depth, the work makes a bold yet refined statement in modern and architectural interiors. This exceptional piece exemplifies Di Benedetto’s experimental approach during a formative period of American modernism, aligning with contemporaneous explorations of shaped canvases and spatial abstraction. Museum-worthy in both concept and execution, it is a rare surviving example of the artist’s mobile paintings and a standout acquisition for collectors of mid-century modern, abstract, and kinetic art. Artist Bio: Angelo Di Benedetto (1913–1992) was a pioneering American modernist whose work bridged painting, sculpture, and spiritual abstraction. Born in New Jersey to Italian immigrant parents, he studied at Cooper Union and the Boston Museum Art School and gained early recognition in New York, including a solo exhibition at the Montross Gallery in 1940. After serving in World War II, Di Benedetto relocated to Colorado, where he became a foundational figure in the region’s modern art movement. He co-founded the Benpro Art School, the Denver Art Center, and was a core member of the influential 15 Colorado Artists group. Renowned for his shaped canvases, circular forms, and kinetic works, Di Benedetto’s art reflects a lifelong exploration of form, movement, and spiritual presence. In recognition of his contributions, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Colorado in 1977. His legacy remains central to the history of American and regional modernism.
