About the Item
Anita Payró (Argentine, 1897 - 1980) was born into a culturally sophisticated family. Her father, Roberto J. Payró, was a noted writer and war correspondent, and her brother Julio Payró became a prominent art critic and historian. Educated across Europe in Barcelona, Brussels, and London, she was influenced early on by Joaquín Torres García’s ideas about geometry, structure, and symbolism, which informed her meticulous compositions. Though not formally aligned with Argentina’s mid-century Arte Concreto movement, Payró explored color and line as autonomous elements, translating lived experiences and emotions into abstract forms. Our piece, a small oil on canvasboard, is a vivid cubist portrait rich in pattern and color.
