About the Item

"Box Being Eaten by an E" by Anne Johnstone is 12 x 12 inches on board and features geometric abstraction with layered textures, focusing on a prism-like central shape in gray, black, and white that projects depth and stands out against the tactile background. A broad, organic beige band snakes around the prism, introducing fluid movement and visual containment in contrast to the rigid figure. The background patchwork of purples, golds, and burgundies, overlaid with grid-like texture, contains partially obscured text hints, adding mystery and inviting interpretation. The contrasting mechanical and organic elements symbolize clarity, structure, and protection, while the abstract forms and colors evoke feeling, duality, and reflection on hidden complexity beneath surface appearances. The sides are unpainted and the work is signed on the back. The painting is wired and ready to hang. Anne Johnstone‘s subject matter is her interior world. Her paintings and drawings are color dense and emotionally charged images about her inner life, everything from personal struggles to physical awareness to the world around her. Using acrylics and canvas collage on her paintings, she creates tightly knit compositions that vibrate with stilled energy. In her oil pastels, layered color takes on hard-to-define hues, while shapes bulge, defining space with both humor and determination. Her drawings combine crayon and gouache with pencil to create psychological dramas. Her style is most akin to abstract expressionism, with bold brush strokes which scribble and drip and declare themselves here for the action. She often uses a glazing medium to enhance the transparency of her colors, making visible the history of color application. “I am drawn to imbalance and asymmetry in my work. I seek to bring attention to those qualities while creating solid compositions.”

"Ab-scrap" - Abstract Geometric Composition in Acrylic on Wood Panel
Located in Soquel, CA
"Ab-scrap" - Abstract Geometric Composition in Acrylic on Wood Panel Dynamic abstract composition by Sam Dantone (American, b. 1971). This piece was created as a part of the "Ab-scrap" series, where Dantone uses excess paint from his sign painting business to create new compositions. Whenever there is a little extra paint on a brush, Dantone would add it to a panel, slowly creating a new composition out of the leftovers from his other work. Thus, each piece contains a wide variety of colors and brushstrokes, and the echoes of other compositions. Signed "Sam Dantone" on verso. No frame. Board size: 20.75"H x 8.75"W Sam Dantone (American, b. 1971) is an artist from Oregon who works as a sign painter, designer, and sculptor. Artist’s Statement: “Not once in my life do I know a time when I have not been an artist. My father tells that I once copied the Kleenex logo from the side of the box, at age three. I tribute my abilities to naïve confidence and other’s positive attention. As a kid, drawing was magical . . . Though my art stylings vary widely, one thread stitches all of my work together, (my art) is my critique on man’s apparent love for life and his constant destruction of it.” Exhibitions: 2015 - FoundSpace, Jackson, WY 2013 - Pacific Park Gallery, Coos Bay...
