About the Item

Anne Johnstone’s "Rocket Box" is a 12 x 12 inch mixed media collage on board incorporates layered newspaper clippings and fragments of text to shape a box being propelled through space, presented in a geometric, cubist-inspired style. Skin tones emerge through the interplay of various printed pieces, while distinct pink paper segments detail the flaps of the box. Soft blue and green hues form the background, causing the box’s form to dominate. Using newspaper as both texture and symbolic medium references communication, knowledge, and storytelling, connecting to themes of creativity, literacy, and information’s transmission. The sides are unpainted and the work is signed on the back. The work is wired and ready to hang. Anne Johnstone‘s subject matter is her interior world. Her paintings and drawings are color dense and emotionally charged images about her inner life, everything from personal struggles to physical awareness to the world around her. Using acrylics and canvas collage on her paintings, she creates tightly knit compositions that vibrate with stilled energy. In her oil pastels, layered color takes on hard-to-define hues, while shapes bulge, defining space with both humor and determination. Her drawings combine crayon and gouache with pencil to create psychological dramas. Her style is most akin to abstract expressionism, with bold brush strokes which scribble and drip and declare themselves here for the action. She often uses a glazing medium to enhance the transparency of her colors, making visible the history of color application. “I am drawn to imbalance and asymmetry in my work. I seek to bring attention to those qualities while creating solid compositions.”
