About the Item
This is a large, two-panel painting with mixed media including acrylic paint, sand, newspaper, small stones, and other materials integrated to create texture. The two panels may be hung as close together or far apart as desired. The abstract imagery wraps around the edges of the canvas so there is no need to frame. Includes all installation hardware and is ready to hang.
"The ambitious scale and expansive physical gestures in much of Antonio Puri’s work facilitate the sense of an expanded enhanced vision: perhaps microscopic, perhaps cosmic. In some ways, large paintings are especially intimate because they create human experiential contexts. Puri’s paintings record the physicality of their making; pouring and mingling paints, inks, and powders of varying viscosities and textures, Puri builds work that is intentionally simple and grounded in decipherable human activity." – Robin Rice
Antonio Puri was born in Chandigarh, Punjab, India and raised in the Himalayas around Buddhist monks before studying at the Academy of Art in San Francisco, Coe College, and the University of Iowa. He established his studio in Philadelphia where he practiced for many years before relocating to Bogotá, Colombia. During this time, Puri completed several artist residencies all over the world, including in New York, Hungary, Bulgaria, Colombia, South Africa, Serbia, Mauritius, India, Denmark, Trinidad and Tobago, and Romania. Puri’s range of geographical and cultural experiences are embedded in his work, where he commonly explores the relationships between his eastern and western cultural connections.
Puri has exhibited his work all over the world, including at the Museo de Arte del Tolima in Colombia; Sundaram Tagore Gallery Singapore; Government Museum and Art Gallery Chandigarh, India; Art Depot, Austria; La Cometa Gallery, Bogota; Museo Casa Conde Rul, Mexico; The Guild, NY; Nu Art Gallery in Santa Fe; Twelve Gates, Philadelphia; Philadelphia Art Alliance; Noyes Museum, NJ; Essl Museum, Austria; Hammond Museum, NY; Queens Museum, NY; Sundaram Tagore Gallery, NY; Gallery Espace, New Delhi; Edsviks Konsthall, Stockholm; MOP Gallery, Sydney; Musee du Chateau, France; Corcoran Gallery in DC; and Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MN, among others. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh, India; Punjab Lalit Kala Academy, Chandigarh, India; National Gallery of Modern Art, Mauritius; Noyes Museum, NJ; Albertina Museum, Austria; Musee du Chateau, France; Museo de Arte del Tolima, Colombia; and Bergen Museum of Art and Science, NJ.
"I am interested in comparing connections between my eastern roots and my western experiences. I embrace the possibility that we can exist in a world free from labels." - Antonio Puri
