About the Item

Two Umbrellas 48 X 120 Diptych About the Artist Antonio Ugarte (b. 1961, Valencia, Venezuela; lives and works in Miami, FL) Antonio Ugarte began his artistic career in Venezuela, where he studied drawing, painting, photography, and sculpture. His work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions throughout Venezuela and the United States, as well as in Austria, Finland, France, Italy, Peru, and Spain. In 1984, Ugarte was awarded the Drawing Prize at the 1st Biennial of Visual Arts in Maracaibo, Venezuela, and in 2012 his painting Transition received recognition from the International Association of Art Critics (AICA), Venezuela Chapter. Ugarte is widely recognized for his meditative explorations of water, light, and landscape—particularly in his celebrated Florida Landscapes series. His practice reflects a poetic inquiry into nature’s spiritual and symbolic dimensions. Critical Commentary “These paintings are an invitation for a pause, for a meditation… a mystical appreciation of our environment.” — Axel Stein, 2023 Advisor to the Modern and Contemporary Latin American Art Market “Only an artist who has carefully studied water’s behavior could turn its myriad appearances into artistic truths.” — Susana Benko, 2012 Art critic and researcher, Member of AICA “In his paintings, he evokes a dance—sometimes joyful, sometimes solemn—reflecting life in motion.” — María Chiara Teodori, 2008 Poet “Water and light merge into an essential equation: life and illumination.” — Miriam Robles, 1997 Former Director, Museo Sacro de Caracas “A revelation of water—its metaphorical power and visual ritual.” — Juan Carlos Palenzuela, 1995 Art critic and researcher “The surface—where color and light interact independently of drawing—acquires conceptual significance.” — Bélgica Rodríguez, 1993 Honorary President, AICA International; Art historian, art critic, and author of the most important books on the history of Latin American art

48 x 104 in. / 4 x 8.6 ft (2 panels) "Chromatic Fantasy" Large Oil on Linen
By Alexis Portilla
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This is a beautiful, abstract expressionist oil painting on linen by Alexis Portilla. This piece is in 2 panels. He obtained his Masters of Fine Arts at Columbia University in 1990. His bold linear lines, use of symbols, pictographs and strong colors create atmospheric abstracts. Influenced by the emotion of artistic expression in music, poetry and literature, the artist finds bold expression in color, lines and shapes that resemble pictographs, and texture. “Using simple forms and creating swathes of rich texture, Alexis Portilla builds atmospheric abstract paintings that convey a sense of time having passed. Brushy areas of color suggest the indeterminacy of memory, while bold linear forms speak for the present.” “In some of his smaller works, Portilla experimented with beeswax. Applying a smooth coat of wax over the surface, the artist sealed in his sparse, abstract forms, while leaving whole sections empty, the images hover in the wax, as if frozen in time, yet the pieces have a fresh, almost dewy look.” - Meredith Mendelsohn, Art News magazine review. The artist has shown in group and solo exhibitions both nationally and internationally. His works have been commissioned by major corporations, universities and for private collections.
