Max Manning is a Houston-based painter whose practice he describes as “algorithmic abstraction”, studio-built systems that he deliberately disrupts to create compositions where loosely figurative fragments, patterns, and color fields collide. Working in series, Manning sets up rule-driven visual frameworks such as grids, repeated motifs, cut-outs, and layered shapes, and then interrupts them through shifts in palette, gesture, and scale. Manning earned a BFA in Two-Dimensional Studies from Bowling Green State University (2011) and an MFA from the University of Cincinnati (2014). June 2023 "Abstract Environment" Unframed-Ready to hang / 12 x 24 x 1.5 Acrylic on Gallery Wrapped Canvas. Sides will be painted to match the painting. (8 layers) I have created some texturing within sections of the painting. Painted with palette knives. The painting's focus-as with many of my paintings are on the center. And, in this case Orange being the center point. There are additional shades of Bright Aqua Green, Gold, Ochre, Light Blue, Skin Tone, Wine Red, Green, and Orange Yellow with bold palette knife applications and then I have created Lines and a small box and a oblong configured line to create a bit of character. My idea with this canvas once I was obtaining my concept was a feeling of moods of Light in the Environment. There are small details in the painting that are hard to pick up with my photographs. The painting can be hung 4 different directions - so there is 2 Vertical hangings and 2 Horizontal hangings. Felt pads included on backside corners. He attended, at a very young age, the home of painter Enrico Sottili and, as a student, the studio of sculptor Gaetano Negri. He graduated "Master of Art" in 1961 from the State Art Institute of Cantù, where he taught from 1964 to 1978. Participated in 1968 in the national exhibition for young painters of the "San Fedele" prize in Milan. In 1969 he was featured in the exhibition "Urban Field. Aesthetic Interventions in the Urban Dimension," organized in Como, with a collective intervention on the theme "Signal Color." From 1977 to 1978 he was part of the research group "The Systematic Questioning" with Nato Frascà and Antonio Scaccabarozzi. Since 1979, at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, he has taught the special course in "Chromatology" and collaborated, as a consultant, with companies for the application of chromatic solutions in industrial production.
