Arthur Dove: 1880-1946. One of the most important early American Modernists and Abstract Expressionists. He has had auction results over $8,000,000 and that record was 2 weeks ago. At that same auction a 3 by 5 inch watercolor sold for $112,500 with buyers premium. This spectacular gem was listed by Andrew Crispo as a watercolor but I feel that was incorrect. It definitely has some oils and or gouache. Crispo handled some very important artists but was far from an art expert on medium. This might also have some watercolor but definitely has more to it. It came in a terrible unworthy frame and would have most likely shown foxing if it was just a watercolor. The painting is signed bottom center. Provenance was Dove, Stieglitz, private collection, Crispo to collector who purchased a number of these 5 by 7 pieces in 1976. The Sun was one of Dove's favorite subjects and this is a powerful example of his genius. Not only a fabulous painting by this modern master, but a great investment and strategic hedge against inflation!

Arthur Dove
Arthur Garfield Dove was an American artist. Born in Canandaigua on August 2, 1880, Dove is credited as being the first innovative abstract painter in America. Dove used a wide range of media, sometimes in unconventional combinations, to produce his abstractions and his abstract landscapes. Many of his abstractions showed obvious Oriental influence and were derived from landscape and organic subjects with color used freely and calligraphic lines emphasizing energy or force. Generally, Dove’s method was to make watercolor sketches outdoors and later oil paintings in his studio. Dove died on November 23, 1946, in Huntington.
