About the Item
Barbara Daly Baekeland (1922 - 1972) was an American socialite who was murdered by her son, Anthony in London in 1972. She was married to Brooks Baekeland who was the son of Leo Baekeland, the inventor of Bakelite plastic.
She started her early career in New York as a model for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. Once married to Brooks they lead a very social nomadic lifestyle, renting houses and villas in London, Paris, Zermatt, Cap d'Antibes, Majorca and throughout Italy.
She had a troubled relationship with both her husband and son, whose severe mental and physical illness led the mother to desperate measures and the son to violent outbursts. The scandalous mother-son relationship fueled the rumor mills and imagination of high society for decades. Things escalated ultimately leading to Barbara's headline-making murder at the hands of her own son.
