About the Artist: Beatrice Mandelman (1912–1998)
Beatrice Mandelman was a pioneering force in 20th-century American modernism, known for her vibrant use of color and geometric abstraction. Trained at the Art Students League of New York, she emerged from the dynamic New York art scene before moving to Taos, New Mexico, in 1944 with her husband, painter Louis Ribak. There, she co-founded the Taos Valley Art School and played a central role in the development of the Taos Moderns, a group that brought international modernist sensibilities to the American Southwest.
Mandelman’s work blends influences from European modernism, Native American art, and Southwestern landscapes, resulting in a unique visual language that continues to resonate with collectors and critics alike. Her pieces have been exhibited nationally and are held in the permanent collections of major institutions, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
