About the Item
Belle Cramer (American, 1883 - 1978) was a painter whose vivid color and expressive compositions made her a central figure in mid-20th-century St. Louis art. Born in New York, NY, she studied at the Edinburgh College of Art and later at Massey Art School in London, where she exhibited widely and joined the progressive London Group. Relocating to St. Louis in 1940, she quickly became a key member of the local arts scene, showing at the St. Louis Art Museum and Eleanor Smith Galleries, and teaching at the People’s Art Center and YMCA School of Informal Education. Cramer’s oils and prints, often inspired by nature and abstraction, display her mastery of color and enduring joy in painting. Her work is held in the Saint Louis Art Museum, among other collections, and she was affectionately called the “Grande Dame of St. Louis painters.”
