About the Item
This piece is made by casting Hydrostone on top of an oil clay pattern. Once cured, the oil clay is removed, then paint and gilding are applied to emphasize the texture on the surface. Each color represents one hour of laying out the pattern, once that time passes a new section is begun, this is highlighted by a change in color. The piece is hung with an aluminum z clip. A foam core pattern will be included to aid with placement and install.
This colorful and textured wall sculpture is inspired by cartography and the geography of land masses. Galveston's surface references the patterned fields of the midwest where I'm from. Slight shading in the paint works to give the piece depth. The gold leaf act as bookends punctuating this beautiful piece. This piece looks particularly amazing at a raking angle.
Ben Watkins was born in Owensboro, Kentucky in 1977. He holds a BFA from Murray State University and a MFA from Rhode Island School of Design, both degrees in furniture design. He current lives and works in Lincoln, Rhode Island. He has been exhibited nationally and is in both public and private collections.
