About the Item
This sculpture consists of hundreds of bent-laminated D-shaped pieces glued to a plywood substrate. The piece is hung using a series of aluminum z-clips. The sculpture come apart into four sections. The piece is 4" deep so it complies with commercial building regulations.
T-bird's composition was inspired the maze like patterns I was using in my other work. Using bent lamination process, I made around 1200 individual parts that I attached to a plywood backer. The painting was inspired by an amazing day turned to evening with a good-time friend out on the water. I like how you see through the sculpture to the painting, as if the sculpture was a window outward.
Ben Watkins was born in Owensboro, Kentucky in 1977. He holds a BFA from Murray State University and a MFA from Rhode Island School of Design, both degrees in furniture design. He current lives and works in Lincoln, Rhode Island. He has been exhibited nationally and is in both public and private collections.
