In his artistic work, his vivid paintings reflect a dual identity that has always been the common thread in his work.
Blending Western influences and her mother's Mozambican roots, her original and explosive use of colour and subject matter has resulted in extraordinary abstract constructions, which she has often combined with salvaged materials to gradually establish her own identity as a painter.
In Rome, an exhibition of the artist's work is currently being held at the Palazzo delle Civiltà.

Bertina Lopes has produced an extraordinary body of work intimately intertwined with political activism and social criticism.
Often fusing formal and constructive elements taken from European art circles with a visuality associated with the African continent, the artist transforms the canvas into a means of expressing freedom, both personally and in response to the repressive situation in her home country.
His works are characterised by intricate compositions of different perspectives and volumes arranged on the same plane.
The cubist influence is evident, although marked by a strong personal gesture when he combines masks and totems to create forms that evoke dance movements made with bold brushstrokes.
Not infrequently, the artist incorporates straw, feathers and coloured fabrics in his works.
Her Totems are inspired by Nyau ceremonies and Tufo dances, local Mozambican traditions that were scorned during the colonial period.
These influences reinforce her being a foreigner in Italy and at the same time help to maintain a strong link with her Mozambican heritage.
