It is such an honor to win third place in Pastel Journal’s Abstract
Non-Objective category.
Featuring my 30x22 pastel art Hidden Jewels, juror Diana Sanford summarizes this piece as a painting full of “distinctive, dynamic scribbles that truly dazzle” with marks that “convey profound emotions.” When I paint, I let the colors I choose and marks I make to be entirely intuitive based on my emotions, giving each of my paintings a sense of life. I began Hidden Jewels full of negative feelings and surrounded by chaos that was beyond my control. The chaos is represented in the aggressive marks that cover the painting. Once I felt better about the problems I was dealing with, I knew the painting was complete. For me, painting is therapy, a way for me to express my emotions when I am unable to with my words.

Always knowing she would be an artist, Betty Efferson, participated in art workshops and actively served in arts organizations while running a business with her husband and raising their two children. Living most of her life in Baton Rouge, LA, Betty has recently retired, and now enjoys the opportunity to paint every day. Betty is an accomplished realistic and impressionistic artist who has been recognized with national and international awards. She has been juried into shows from New York to New Mexico, and is a Pastel Society of America Signature Member and Degas Pastel Society Member. She draws inspiration from the power of nature, daily life and the beauty that surrounds us. Betty’s art captures and expresses feelings through unencumbered use of color, technique and media. She offers the viewer the invitation to travel through the artwork, to enjoy the power and energy or sweetness and shyness of the work, with the viewer’s choosing to find their own expression of feelings.
