About the Item

Mixed medium ,wood, acrylic paint, sculptural piece. 3D Sculpture/painting piece Hand signed and dated verso bears gallery label Bruce Robbins (born 1948) is an American abstract painter and sculptor who emerged as a prominent figure in the mid-1970s, He is also an artist and teacher with a passion for both the visual and performing arts, including puppetry. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1948, He pent a year and a half confined to a hospital bed at the age of five, where he encountered a story about a Native American riding a horse bareback, a story that inspired his fascination with freedom and movement. Graduated from the Cooper Union School of Art in New York City. Received a BFA from SUNY Purchase in 1986. Known for abstract non-objective painting and sculpture. Initial works focused on painted and constructed ladder and seesaw sculptures. By the late seventies, he moved on to create a series of post-modernist works called pilasters, which were shown at MOMA in New York, as well as the Venice Biennale's Art of the Seventies and the Rudolph Zwirner Gallery in Cologne. In the early eighties, he started making constructed paintings which, over time, developed into paintings on canvas, as well as sculpture and an extensive body of drawings. Explored themes of freedom through movement, particularly through the imagery of horses. His work often features a dualistic approach, combining additive (painterly, non-objective) and subtractive (incised lines revealing an abstract armature) elements. Subjects include horses, cities, people, courtrooms, athletes, and actors. His sculptures, sometimes called "reconstructions," are a mixture of painting and sculpture. Has developed a style that resembles Piet Mondrian with added triangle shapes. Had a studio in Port Chester, New York for six years. Was an artist-in-residence at various schools, implementing interdisciplinary projects involving puppetry. Hired by The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry as technical director of the Claudia Boettcher Theater, where he taught stagecraft, acting, video production, and puppetry. Performed puppet shows for diverse audiences, including a one-man show in Italy and Germany at puppet festivals in 1995. Currently teaches visual arts, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, and puppetry, to middle school students. Operates a storefront studio in Dobbs Ferry where he develops personal creative projects and offers puppetry classes for adults. Recognition Exhibitions: Received recognition for his art in New York and Toronto. Exhibited his work in France, Montreal, and the Calgary Stampede Artists' Studios in 2014. A group of his work is also on permanent view at the Hess Collection Museum in Napa, California. His work has received reviews in many national art magazines and newspapers. His work is included in major biennials and collected by major institutions. He had a solo exhibition in New York focusing on paintings and drawings inspired by the poem "An Elephant Crossed the Road" by Marc Straus. Born in Philadelphia, graduated from the Cooper Union School of Art and Architecture in New York City. In the mid-seventies, he broke into the art scene as a new image sculptor with a series of painted and constructed ladder and seesaw sculpture. By 1979 he was producing a series of pilaster and door sculptures, which combined sculpture and painting signaling the post modernist movement. Related to Memphis Milano, Peter Shire, Ettore Sottsass, Gaetano Pesce and post modernism. Over the last two decades he has continued with his interest in structure and painting using architecture as a common theme. During the mid-nineties he produced a series of works called the Berlin windows, which is on permanent display. In recent years, he has developed a series of paintings with buildings and primary shelters as his subject matter, as well as a series of painted and constructed sculptures called Walls, which serve as a meditation on painting and sculpture.
