In this large-scale, hallucinatory tableau, the familiar collapses into the surreal. A dark sedan tilts precariously across a flooded, dreamlike plane while rabbits—some spectral, some almost tenderly present—dot the landscape like living punctuation marks. Around them, small eruptions of fire flare against an icy blue ground, producing a visual temperature that flickers between danger and stillness. A lone tree burns steadily, its canopy dissolving into abstraction.
The painting stages a crisis and a lull at the same time: a pastoral world disturbed by catastrophe, a disaster rendered with almost childlike clarity. Instead of narrative closure, the work offers atmospheric tension—an ecosystem in suspension, a moment after impact but before meaning has settled. The inset image of a gallery interior functions like a portal or an echo, implicating the viewer as both witness and participant.
The piece mines the uncanny edges of memory, ecological anxiety, and dream-logic. It suggests that landscapes—emotional, environmental, internal—are always collapsing and reforming beneath us. The result is a painting that feels at once mythic and contemporary: a lyrical meditation on fragility, disorientation, and the strange beauty that emerges when worlds break open.

C. Dimitri
C. Dimitri has received fellowships in painting from the Vermont Studio Center and the RI State Council on the Arts. A staff illustrator for The Rumpus, he has illustrated texts and book covers and has added drawings to the Kenyon Review, Bomb Magazine, and the streets of Providence. Two of his climate-change graph paintings are in the permanent collection of the Boston Public Library.
Solo exhibitions include the Tabla Rasa Gallery (Brooklyn), Aurora (Providence), and Crocker Griffin (Narragansett), with select exhibits at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, and Brooklyn's Irondale Theater, Greenpoint, and Groundfloor galleries. He has also shown in Miami, Provincetown, and Los Angeles.
Dimitri received a doctorate in literature from the University of Essex, England. His focus on aesthetic modernism informs his visual work.
