About the Item

"Inner Glow" is an acrylic on shaped canvas painting stretched over a wooden armature creating a 3D wall sculpture. With this majestic figure adorned in radiant color, artist Claes Gabriel honors those who have preceded him in his creative career. The form of the traditional African mask references his heritage, while the flattened forms and simplified geometry in the figure's facial features evoke the modernist techniques of artists Jacob Lawrence and his own artist-father, Jacques Gabriel, The shaped canvas projecting from the wall recalls the formal experiments of Frank Stella, Ellsworth Kelly, Sam Gilliam and other mid-century artists. Gabriel has claimed that he knows when he has finished a piece when he can bow to it, reinforcing the reverence in his work. Claes Gabriel is a Philadelphia-based artist from Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Gabriel earned his BFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art, and performed graduate work at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art. He is best known for his canvases inspired by the African Diaspora, both 2D and shaped, as well as his public murals. Gabriel often stretches canvas over his hand-constructed wooden armatures to construct masks and freestanding statues, which he considers to be paintings rather than sculptures. Most of his wall-hanging masks are painted with vivid colors on the back, which casts a glow onto the white wall behind it, enlarging the space of the piece. Gabriel has exhibited in New York, NY; Port-au-Prince, Haiti; Baltimore, MD; Philadelphia, PA; Washington DC; and Paris, France. His work is in the permanent collection of the Petrucci Family Foundation Collection of African American Art, Art in Embassies Collection, the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, MD and in many private collections.
