Johann Strauss Artie Shaw - Mid Century Modern Abstract Swirling vortex of color and the words: "Johann Strauss' Tale(s) from the Vienna (Woods) Artie Shaw Orchestra" by Kansas artist Clarke Blocher Unframed. Image, 18.07"H x 16"W. "Tales from the Vienna Woods" is a waltz by Johann Strauss II. Composed in 1868, "Geschichten aus dem Wienerwald", Op. 325, was one of six Viennese waltzes by Johann Strauss II which featured a virtuoso part for zither. The title of Strauss' dance recalls the folk music of the inhabitants of the Vienna Woods. Artie Shaw was an American clarinetist, composer, bandleader, actor and author. Widely regarded as "one of jazz's finest clarinetists", Shaw led one of the United States' most popular big bands in the late 1930s through the early 1940s. Artist Bio: Born at Kalispell Montana, Studied at the university of Kansas. During the 1930’s-1940’s he lived in Santa Clara, California. Blocher was assistant to Spanish artist Luis Quintanilla during his major mural project at the University of Kanasas City in 1940.
