Curtis Ripley's paintings have always presented the viewer a space where images are as important as the depth of the atmosphere in which they exist. The images are more evocative than literal, leaving the viewer with the sensation of entering an autonomous painting world in constant motion. These works are improvisational - Ripley’s pictorial concern lies with creating an atmosphere, a spatial depth and a mood. Taking cues from the anti-figurative aesthetic of American Abstract Expressionists, Ripley’s process is one of spontaneity and gesture.
