David has been developing his practice for over 20 years, moving from photography to painting around the turn of the century. He studied media production and film in Bristol during the 90s, going on to become a lecturer in Visual Communication. After a stint at the University of Oxford, David returned to Creative Arts Education and is currently a Dean at the University of the Arts London. He grew up on the Isle of Wight and now lives in rural Oxfordshire.
"My work is situated in the blurred space between the abstract and the figurative. Suggesting the sense of a location, my paintings are an invitation to step into imagined spaces. Inspired by Kandinsky and Richter, the work variously gestures towards horizons, skies, tundra and waters allowing, I hope, the viewer to ascribe weights and emphasis.
I work rapidly with acrylics on canvas, playing with the malleability of the medium from the texture of impasto to the mercurial character of free-flowing pigment. I don’t set out with a sharp plan, instead follow where the work takes me through an exploration of colour and form. I feel that there is a singular image behind my work which I reveal from different perspectives with each painting. I find myself drawn towards the notion of horizon and a connection to the awe of being lost in a landscape of scale."
