About the Item
This 54" x 60" painting by Canadian artist, Demetrios Papakostas presents a minimalist composition of subtle geometric forms rendered in muted, earthy, beige tones. The canvas is divided into distinct rectangular sections, with the dominant portion occupying the upper area in a warm, peachy-beige color with a soft quality. Below this, the composition is split into two vertical rectangles: the left section displays a deeper, more saturated pinkish-brown or mauve tone, while the right section features a cooler, lighter grayish-white or pale lavender hue. The transitions between these color blocks are clean and precise, creating sharp linear boundaries that emphasize the geometric structure. The painting is executed with a smooth, even application of paint, giving each color field a uniform quality. The overall palette is remarkably restrained, working within a narrow range of warm and cool neutrals.
Demetrios Papakostas is a Canadian painter who makes abstract paintings characterized by his passion for bold technical investigation, colour spatial and perception. His thoughtful inquiry into the subtleties of the relationship between abstract thinking and the human condition, are characteristic of his deeply held conviction that art must speak from, and to, heart, mind and soul. Born in 1960 in Montreal, Canada, he first became interested in the arts after visiting an artist’s studio while on a family trip to Greece. The artist Tassos Loukithis, was a family friend and it was there after seeing multiple paintings and struck by the beauty of many religious icons hung up all over the artist’s studio that he decided he wanted to draw and paint. He studied portrait drawing, watercolour and abstraction at the Visual Arts Center in Montreal with Nicole Lebel, Heather Yamada, and with prominent Canadian painter Harold Klunder, and also taking various art classes at the Saidye Bronfman Center for the Arts, and at the University of Concordia night art school. Recently in March 2020 he collaborated with fellow artist and friend Gianni Giuliano, to organize and curate the group exhibition titled “diver(s)gence” his first curatorial project, and something which he considers to be an important accomplishment as he strives to continue to look to take on new roles and challenges. Demetrios has participated in exhibitions since 2003 at Gallery Latitude 44 in Toronto, and at the Visual Arts Centre, Galerie Espace, and Galerie E.K. Voland, Galerie Beaux Arts des Ameriques and Galerie Erga in Montreal and Galerie de la Ville, Gallery ArtZone 42 in Athens, Greece. His artwork was also selected to appear in a Quebec-made film, entitled “Sur le Rythme”. His work is collected by and present in several businesses, corporations and private homes. Papakostas is represented by Denison Gallery in Toronto, Ontario and 1515 Lincoln Gallery in the US.

Abstract #18
, by Anthony Dyke, Oil Painting on Panel
Located in Oklahoma City, OK
This 11" x 14" oil on canvas painting is by Boston-based artist, Anthony Dyke. The painting is an example of geometric abstraction, composed through an arrangement of rectilinear forms, each rendered in bold, saturated color.
Dominating the left side is a deep green vertical rectangle and adjacent to it is a narrow red vertical stripe, generating a visual dialogue between the broader green plane and the surrounding forms. A field of light blue occupies the top portion above. mid-composition, a horizontal mint green band stretches across the surface, and on top rests a tilted rectangular form shifting from white to warm red in a subtle gradient. To the far right, a tall blue vertical bar intersects with a fine yellow line. The base of the painting features a complex layering of darker hues: a black horizontal stripe, accompanied by stacked rectangles in red, purple, and yellow.
Anthony Dyke was born in Norwich, Vermont and attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University earning a BFA and MFA in painting. As an artist and arts educator, he relocated from New York City to his downtown Oklahoma City studio, working there for two decades before returning to Boston in 2020. Coming from Vermont where the seasons are distinctly different from one another, his shift from a pastoral setting to an urban environment set up a dichotomy in the work, both visual and emotional. Tony has an extensive education in painting, photography, graphic design and figure sculpture. These mediums intersect in his work through many years of creating artworks and currently speak to his interest in abstract painting. During his senior year in the BFA Program at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, my large painting “Natole” was chosen by Frank Stella (the juror) into the highly competitive and prestigious Dana Pond...
