Dennis Alter's layered and textured oil on canvas paintings are rich with painterly activity. Gestural brushwork, heavy impasto, and layers upon layers of color lend a complexity to each work that invites multiple approaches to viewing. Alter's experimental use of painting tools and techniques -- scraping, carving, impressing -- play an important role in the process of discovery. He describes his process creating "Wall of Sound:"
"Dragging a flat edge across a still-wet painted surface
creates the potential for a new entity, a new life.
The surface of the paint in invaded, dispossessed, and
transformed by the act of sweeping across the colors
and volume; destroying things, but creating a heightened
synthesis of them." - Dennis Alter
"Wall of Sound" is a contemporary abstract oil painting with predominant colors of blue, green, yellow, and red. It is signed and dated on the back.
Alter is an award-winning artist who has exhibited his work at Perkins Center for the Arts in Collingswood, NJ; Main Line Art Center in Haverford, PA; and Woodmere Art Museum in Philadelphia, PA. His paintings can be found in permanent collections of Woodmere Art Museum, the Fox School of Business, the Gittis Student Center, and the Charles Library at Temple University. They can also be found in numerous private collections.
