About the Item
This painting is gouache on board by tapestry designer Dirk Holger. Born in 1939, Holger worked in Jean Lurcat’s atelier in Munich, Germany. Lurcat (1896-1966) was a famous French painter and tapestry designer and fabricator. Lurcat’s tapestry designs of the mid century period are known and collected worldwide. They featured colorful and bold images representing nature in a somewhat abstract and playful manner. Atelier designer Dirk Holger brought a more brutalist and geometric approach to Lurcat’s creations. Later in life, Holger moved to the United States, outside of Washington, DC. There, he died recently.
This particular design of Holgers was done in 1973. The back side of the work is heavily notated in his own hand in 2009. It tells the background of the production of the actual tapestry runs (3). The work is gouache on heavy stock board and measures just under 20” x 24”. It is framed under museum quality plexiglass, as is the back side, so that Holger’s original notation is visible. The frame is a weather chestnut like wood of the period, with the inner edge painted in a contrasting off white color to affect a liner. The overall framed measurements are about 26” x 30”.
This powerful work is a masterful display of color, form and detail. From a distance the bold simple shapes hold the eye, while closer inspection reveals a multitude of line-work. This original design for what appears to be a Lurcat tapestry is as boldly beautiful as the actual tapestries themselves. The painting would command a wall, room or space and easily fit into a modernist interior.
The painting and frame are in very good condition with no significant issues to report. The frame is of the period and has only very minor age related aging, as one would expect. The painting is signed discreetly in the lower right corner.
