About the Item
Light’n’Lines No.26 is an abstract painting by contemporary German artist Doris Marten, featuring a striking composition of vertical lines in vibrant hues of turquoise, teal, and sky-blue, interspersed with subtle accents of yellow-green and warm orange-red. The square work is created with oil on Alu-Dibond. Dimensions are 45 × 45 cm (17.7 × 17.7 in).
The artwork is signed, sold unframed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
Doris Marten’s work investigates the visual effects born from the interplay of light and colour. As in her other series, lines and luminosity form the core vocabulary of the paintings. Yet Light’n’Lines introduces a temporal dimension that casts new light on her earlier creations. Time itself becomes the raw material of the series, essential to the unfolding of each piece. The identical parallel lines that structure the canvas embody the temporal continuum—past, present, and future—within the act of creation. Through a constant exploration of colour, the artist imbues her works with a metaphysical resonance.
Using nothing more than lines, Doris Marten delves into how colours are perceived and how they influence one another. In this work, the vibrant blue strokes seem to generate their own inner glow, standing out against the surrounding darkness and producing a sense of depth, motion, or even a liquid veil of light. Each line reveals colour on its own while activating subtle interactions between hues. Her deep mastery of colour enables her to craft optical illusions, impressions of movement, and striking shifts in luminosity. For Marten, time functions as a true material—an essential component in the evolution of the artwork throughout its creation.

Doris Marten
Doris Marten’s paintings explore the perception of colours and their mutual influence, immersing the viewer in an abstract geometric world. She uses lines that reveal colours individually and bring to life the effects of their juxtapositions. The artist has developed a thorough knowledge of colours which allows her to create optical illusions, impressions of movement and intense variations of light. From the beginning of the 2000’s, her work has been regularly exhibited in Germany and elsewhere in the world (United States, Europe). Two of her works have been included in the German Bundestag collection. “Time is a material that is necessary to create my paintings. Line by line, they are created in a concentrated process that has much in common with the activity of writing or even telling a story.’’
