Edward Zutrau (1922–1993) was an American painter whose career spanned from the 1940s through the early 1990s. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, he was introduced to art by his grandfather, a designer, and trained at institutions such as the Art Students League and the Brooklyn Museum. In the 1940s and '50s, Zutrau was part of the downtown New York bohemian art scene. His early work, rooted in dynamic realism, evolved into a more abstract style influenced by the New York School and European artists like Matisse and Gauguin. By the mid-1950s, his paintings began to incorporate simplified forms and gestural marks.
In 1958, Zutrau moved to Japan with his family, where he had five solo exhibitions over five years, receiving praise for his bold use of color and space. Critics recognized his work as a unique fusion of Western abstraction and Japanese aesthetics. His time in Japan was pivotal, with shows at prestigious galleries like Chou Koran and Tokyo Gallery, where his work, including *Tokyo Image* (1959), explored strong color contrasts and free-form shapes.
After returning to the U.S. in 1967, Zutrau continued painting and teaching, inspiring students at institutions such as the Fashion Institute of Technology and New York University. He became a close friend of art dealer Betty Parsons, who held three solo shows of his work between 1972 and 1980. His later paintings, like those in his 1975 and 1980 shows, explored surface texture and elemental themes, drawing comparisons to artists like Rothko and Newman.
Zutrau’s works are held in prominent collections, including the Wadsworth Atheneum, and his art was widely admired for its clarity, originality, and emotional depth. He passed away unexpectedly in 1993 at the age of 71, leaving behind a legacy as both a respected artist and a dedicated teacher.

Howard Daum was born in Poland. His family lived in Lodz until he turned 14, when he and his mother left the counrtry. They settled in Montreal, Canada, where Daum learned from the artist Alexander Bercovitch from 1934 to 1937. In 1938, Daum and his mom traveled to New York and chose the Bronx as their home.
After finishing high school in 1940, Daum received a scholarship to the Art Students League. There, he learned from teachers like Will Barnet, Cameron Booth, Morris Kantor, Harry Sternberg, and Vaclav Vytlacil, who was a key mentor. Vytlacil had studied under modern painter Hans Hofmann in Munich in 1921 and helped start the American Abstract Artists group in 1936.
In 1943 and 1944, Daum served in the U. S. Army in Mississippi before coming back to New York. During 1944 and 1945, he had lessons with Hofmann at his school in Greenwich Village. Daum's art during this time became more abstract, using bold and bright colors with clear brushstrokes. The space in his work was very shallow, with objects like figures and easels overlapping each other.
Some of Daum’s artist friends, such as Robert Barrell, Peter Busa, and Steve Wheeler...

Commemorate, Original Contemporary Red, White, and Blue Abstract Painting, 2022
30" x 48" x 1.5" (HxWxD) Acrylic and Ink on Canvas
A vibrant color palette of blues, reds, and greens flows across the canvas in abstracted forms that imply the movement of water. It looks as though you are looking up at a distorted image through the movement of the ocean overhead. The red, white, and blue color scheme invokes a patriotic feel, as if you are spending the 4th of July on a lake.
Artist Commentary:
30 x 48 x 1.5” gallery wrapped with painted edges. Acrylic and Ink on canvas.
This is one in my series of emotionally charged coastal abstract artworks. I used saturated vibrant colors and powerful brush strokes, as I do in all my paintings, in order to create a lasting visual impression.
Materials:
Professional acrylic paints and canvas. Finished with a glaze of UV varnish to protect against sunlight and dust damage.
My art pieces are held in private and commercial collections around the world, including the UK, Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Asia, France, Canada, Australia and USA.
