Red 7 and Pink Z - Large-Scale Abstract Composition in Acrylic on Canvas
Abstract composition by Ellis Hopkins (American, b. 1952). Angular red and pink forms appear to push against one another, bisected by dynamic black strokes that lend a sense of energy and balance. The cool blue background amplifies the composition’s spatial depth. Reminiscent of Kandinsky, Hofmann, and Emily Sillman, the piece celebrates the interplay of spontaneity and structure within a modernist vocabulary.

Ellis Hopkins (American, b. 1952) was born in Lawrence, Kansas, but spent most of her life in California. She lived in Monterey and Carmel Valley, where she was a prolific painter, focusing mostly on gestural abstraction, color blocking, and abstracted still lifes. She studied at the Carmel Art Institute.
