About the Item

For George Merheb, writing and drawing have mixed destinies. The lines build illegible words in a stunning mix of lines and curves. Indecipherable words build ambiguous ideas and unavowable stories. Legends that make you dream, such as that of Europe removed from its Phoenician coasts to land on banks that were waiting for it to have a Name. Or that of Cadmos going in search of his sister Europe and sowing his alphabet on all Mediterranean shores. The presence of scattered drawings seems to help the viewer find a piece of wire that, however, leads to other puzzles. An apple, a flower, a bull, which arise from nowhere among the cabalistic scriptures, almost deliberately mislead. History that has no history. Creative chaos dominates the work. A chaos haunted by letters, their dimension and energy beyond their form, inventing a new language where signs go beyond their material reality to become accessible to all eyes, cultures and dreams. A systematic deconstruction of traditional writings in favor of a new global language. The Babel without borders goes beyond all logic and any attempt to find a map that can guide the eye to continue its search for the known, the readable. The superposition of alphabets recalls the strata of sunken civilizations that can only be found by delving deep into history. This story common to the peoples of the "Mare Nostrum".
