About the Item

The work of Gloria Segura Jordá transcends mere aesthetics to constitute a feminist discourse deeply anchored in the pictorial. Her production challenges the passive gaze, inviting a raw and necessary reflection on identity, oppression, and the formidable capacity for resistance. In this context, one of the fundamental axes of her work is the use of floral motifs and ornamentation, not as decoration, but as a radical visual metaphor for cancellation. The Flower as a Sign of Cancellation and Wear Segura Jordá’s use of the flower is deliberately subversive. Far from the flower as a decorative, romantic symbol, or one historically associated with feminine fragility, the artist transforms this element into a signifier of the wounded, the torn, and the silenced. In works like Déchiré 03, which means "torn" or "shredded," the floral forms are stripped of their superficial beauty. They are not fresh petals but emerge instead as open, visible wounds. This representation directly alludes to a collective body—that of women—marked by historical oppression, symbolic violence, and the systemic cancellation of their voice and space. The flower, a symbol of life, is here converted into a register of damage. Furthermore, the technique perfectly aligns with this discourse. The use of mixed media—acrylic and pencil on board—is not coincidental. It allows the artist to explore textures that evoke the organic and the worn. The density and harshness of the surface deny the expected softness in floral painting, reflecting the harshness of reality and the strength required to survive. The material wear and cracks in the support are metaphors for emotional and social scars. By leaving the paper or board exposed and marked, Segura exhibits a constant tension between the vital and the painful, between the attempt to erase and the impossibility of disappearing. The work does not merely show pain; it incorporates it into its structure, turning every layer of paint into an act of memory and every break into an act of defiance.
