About the Item
This is a very colorful and energetic painting by unknown but very competent American artist Ham Morton. It is nicely signed and dated 1957. It could be that the artist used a pseudonym at the time or was a woman who later married and changed her name. Given the high ability level of the work, it may well be either of the two scenarios.
The painting is oil on a wood panel and has a handmade period wood frame as a surround. Color shapes, recalling Matisse’s cutouts cascade down the surface, interlocking and visually moving at the same time. They are grounded as though a piece of sculpture in a dark base at the bottom of the work. There are shapes of primary and secondary colors in the assemblage. The result is a bold effect that plays off the neutral wide and painted frame.
The painting measures 12” x 24” in a striking vertical format. The outside measurements of the frame are 17 1/2” x 29 1/2”. The frame is two leveled, presenting the painting prominently. Both are in very good condition with no issues to report, other than very minor issues here and there attest to its age.
