About the Item

"The Scream", A compelling, enigmatic 1950s Mid-Century Modern Surrealist Abstract Painting by Notable Chicago Artist, Harold Haydon (Am. 1909-1994). Executed in Haydon's unique, abstracted "Binocular Vision" painting style for which his post-war work became best recognized. A unique painting from the artist's estate collection, expressing dynamic energy and timely, prescient character. Artwork size: 20 x 16 inches, oil on canvas, in original frame, (Framed size: 21 x 17 inches). Signed and dated "Harold Haydon, 24-VII-50", lower left; signed and titled on artist's hand written label on reverse. Estate stamped. Provenance: Estate of the artist. Harold Emerson Haydon was born in 1909 in Fort William, Ontario, Canada. He moved to America in 1917, settling with his family in Chicago, Illinois and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1941. Haydon attended the University of Chicago Lab School and the University of Chicago, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Philosophy. He also studied at the Art Institute of Chicago in the early 1930s. Haydon became a Professor of Art at the University of Chicago from 1944-1975 and later taught as an instructor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1975-1981. From 1975-1982, Haydon also taught as an Adjunct Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University. He is recognized for his vibrant, painterly landscapes of New England, Vermont and Canada, as well as his dynamic urban views of the city of Chicago and its picturesque lakefront. Harold Haydon served as the longtime, respected art critic of the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper from 1963-1985. He died in Chicago in 1994.
