About the Item

Gary Nadler (1930–1990) Untitled, c. 1980s mixed media on paper Sight size: 18 x 24 inches Overall size with frame: 26.5 x 32.6 Inches In this dynamic composition, Gary Nadler explores the tension between structure and spontaneity through a bold interplay of geometric framing and gestural abstraction. The canvas is bisected horizontally, with mirrored zones of color and form suggesting a dialogue between light and shadow, order and flux. Rectangular compartments in the upper register pulse with saturated blues, yellows, and greens—evoking windows into imagined landscapes or emotional states—while the lower half recedes into deeper, more contemplative tones of crimson and indigo. Nadler’s brushwork is assertive yet lyrical, layering expressive marks atop rigid scaffolds to create a sense of movement within containment. The painting’s duality—both in palette and spatial rhythm—invites reflection on perception, memory, and the architecture of thought. A late-career work, it exemplifies Nadler’s commitment to abstraction as a vehicle for psychological depth and formal innovation. An abstract painter who lived in New York City; Amagansett, Long Island, and Albuquerque, New Mexico, Harry Nadler is described as a "formalist abstract painter of the 1960s-90s whose works were marked by their rich colors, transparencies, and labyrinthine constructions. —The attempt to capture in a purely abstract imagery the quintessential quality of light and contour that emanate from a particular landscape is a hazardous pictorial ambition, but Mr. Nadler has met the challenge of this problem with remarkable success.˜ (Hilton Kramer, The New York Times, April 27, 1974.
