Poet, performance artist, and composer Jackson Mac Low was born in Chicago and began his musical studies during his childhood. Following his coursework at the University of Chicago, he relocated to New York City, where he obtained a BA in Greek from Brooklyn College. His initial endeavors as an etymologist and contributor to reference works formed the basis of his deep interest in the potential within sound units and meaning. Drawing inspiration from Gertrude Stein and Gerard Manley Hopkins, as well as his studies in Buddhism and philosophy, Mac Low often crafted poems intended for performance that employed chance mechanisms instead of traditional syntax or intent. His creations delve into the relationships between language, form, and music by methodically rearranging and silencing discovered and fragmented texts. In a conversation with Jacket magazine, Mac Low articulated his objective as a writer “to allow what exists to be; particularly allowing words, linguistic units, to exist without imposing my thoughts, emotions, or anything else upon them. ”
Mac Low engaged in numerous collaborations, including partnerships with composer John Cage and his wife, poet, artist, and composer Anne Tardos. As a founding member of the avant-garde collective Fluxus, he and coeditor La Monte Young showcased their work in An Anthology of Chance Operations (1963), establishing Mac Low as a significant influence in the Language poetry movement. He published over twenty volumes of poetry, such as 20 Forties (1999), Twenties: 100 Poems (1991), and Representative Works 1938–1985 (1986), in addition to Two Plays: Verdurous Sanguinaria and The Marrying Maiden (1999) and the audio work Open Secrets (1993).
Mac Low was awarded the Wallace Stevens Award from the Academy of American Poets, along with grants and fellowships from entities including the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, PEN, the Fund for Poetry, and the New York Foundation for the Arts. He held teaching positions at various institutions, including New York University and the Mannes School of Music.
He passed away in New York City due to complications from a stroke. A selection of his archival materials is preserved in the Mandeville Special Collections Library at the University of California, San Diego.
