About the Item
Jacqueline Pavlowsky was born in 1921 in Vincennes to Russian and Polish Jewish parents who had emigrated to France. After the war, she pursued parallel studies in chemistry, while devoting herself to painting. A whole, engaging character, "Independent, provocative, festive, she lives freely. Short hair, jacket, cigarette, intimidating silhouette".
In the 1950s, she met Serge Poliakoff in a Pigalle bar, where they played guitar and quickly became good friends. He lived on rue de Seine and she on rue Madame, and they saw each other every day, making music together until Poliakoff's death in 1965. An emancipated, fiercely energetic woman, she was condemned to rest and a quiet life of restricted gestures following a car accident that same year.
She then worked with paper, crumpling and gluing it to create book-objects such as Le Livre du Ah (1965 - 1967). “I explored illogic to the point of disarray”, she notes. In 1971, on learning of her daughter's suicide, Pavlowsky took her own life.
