About the Item
Contrapuntal (4/13) is a unique acrylic on canvas, gloss finish painting by contemporary artist James Lumsden, dimensions are 60 × 60 cm (23.6 × 23.6). The artwork is signed, sold unframed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
By choosing a title drawn from the world of music for this series, the artist invites a compelling analogy:
“The paintings are not about music, but they aspire to its condition. I hope viewers will respond to them as they would to a piece of music — without the need for words. As with music, I hope the work evokes a feeling.”
James Lumsden’s abstract paintings investigate the interplay of light, colour, and depth. His process involves applying and layering dozens of thin coats of acrylic paint and gel gloss on canvas. Using specialised tools, he manipulates each surface — concealing or revealing traces and marks — to construct a sense of inner luminosity and spatial resonance. Layer by layer, this meticulous approach immerses the viewer in a universe that is both mysterious and seductive.
On the surface, traces of colour meet and intertwine, yet they seem to emanate from within the canvas — what the artist calls “an act of fixed movement.” Translucent, vibrant tones overlap and merge, forming delicate yet striking contrasts. Through this refined balance of chance and control, the physical medium is transformed into a poetic expression filled with emotion and depth.
“I want to see something brought to life, struggled for — a work that carries its own history and reflects the time spent in its making. My aim is to create something positive and affirming, filled with both light and darkness, contrasts, hesitations, and contradictions — open paintings that allow the viewer’s imagination to search, wander, or respond freely.”
— James Lumsden
The exhibition views were taken at Holly Johnson Gallery in Dallas.

James Lumsden’s abstract paintings seem to emanate an inner light and give the illusion of movement. His creative process involves superimposing dozens of thin layers of acrylic paint onto the canvas. Layer by layer, the artist succeeds in creating an illusion of depth and light within the painting, immersing the viewer in a mysterious and seductive universe. Translucent, vibrant colours are juxtaposed and blended to create delicate yet bold and contrasting combinations. The material support is thus transformed into a poetic work of art full of emotion. “I aim to make paintings which are luminous, seductive, sensual, and atmospheric. I am fascinated in how the basic materials innate to the medium can be turned into something poetic; an object filled with light, feeling, and emotion. The struggle lies in attempting to reach that stage.”
