About the Item
Contrapuntal Painting (10/25) is a unique acrylic on canvas, matt finish painting by contemporary artist James Lumsden, dimensions are 24 × 18 cm (9.4 × 7.1 in).
The artwork is signed, sold unframed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
By choosing a title drawn from the world of music for this series, the artist establishes a deliberate analogy:
“The paintings are not about music, but they aspire to the condition of music. I hope the viewer responds to them as they would to a piece of music—without the need for words. As with music, I want the work to evoke a feeling.”
James Lumsden’s abstract paintings delve into the interplay of light, color, and depth. His process involves applying and layering dozens of translucent coats of acrylic paint and gel gloss, each meticulously manipulated with custom tools to reveal or obscure traces beneath. Through this patient, meditative buildup, Lumsden creates luminous surfaces that seem to radiate from within, drawing the viewer into a space that feels at once mysterious and immersive.
The chromatic marks and veils of color converge on the surface yet appear to emerge from deep inside the canvas—an effect the artist describes as “an act of fixed movement.” Translucent, vibrant tones overlap and blend to form delicate but striking contrasts. In this delicate balance between control and chance, the painted surface transforms into something poetic—alive with rhythm, emotion, and atmosphere.
As Lumsden explains:
“I want to see something brought to life, struggled for, with a sense of having its own history and reflective of the time spent on its creation. My aim is to produce something positive and affirming, filled with both light and darkness—contrasts, hesitations, and contradictions—open paintings that invite the viewer’s imagination to search, wander, and respond freely.”

James Lumsden’s abstract paintings seem to emanate an inner light and give the illusion of movement. His creative process involves superimposing dozens of thin layers of acrylic paint onto the canvas. Layer by layer, the artist succeeds in creating an illusion of depth and light within the painting, immersing the viewer in a mysterious and seductive universe. Translucent, vibrant colours are juxtaposed and blended to create delicate yet bold and contrasting combinations. The material support is thus transformed into a poetic work of art full of emotion. “I aim to make paintings which are luminous, seductive, sensual, and atmospheric. I am fascinated in how the basic materials innate to the medium can be turned into something poetic; an object filled with light, feeling, and emotion. The struggle lies in attempting to reach that stage.”
