About the Item
Contrapuntal Painting (3/18) is a unique acrylic on canvas, gloss finish painting by contemporary artist James Lumsden, dimensions are 50 × 40 cm (19.6 × 15.7 in). The artwork is signed, sold unframed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
By giving this series a title drawn from the world of music, the artist establishes a deliberate parallel: “These paintings aren’t about music, but they aspire to its condition. I hope viewers respond to them the way they do to a musical piece — without needing words. Like music, I want the work to evoke a feeling.”
James Lumsden’s abstract paintings delve into light, colour, and depth. His process involves applying dozens of thin layers of acrylic paint and gel gloss, each manipulated with specialised tools to reveal or obscure marks on the surface. Gradually, he builds an internal luminosity and dimensionality that draws the viewer into a space that feels both enigmatic and alluring.
The surface becomes a meeting point for chromatic traces that appear to rise from within the canvas — a phenomenon Lumsden describes as “an act of fixed movement.” Translucent, radiant colours overlap and merge, forming combinations that are at once subtle and bold. Through this careful balance of control and chance, the material support is transformed into a poetic and emotionally resonant object.
“I want to see something brought to life — fought for — carrying its own history and reflecting the time invested in its creation. My aim is to create something positive and affirming, filled with light and darkness, contrasts, hesitations and contradictions. Open paintings that allow the viewer’s imagination to wander freely.” — James Lumsden.

James Lumsden’s abstract paintings seem to emanate an inner light and give the illusion of movement. His creative process involves superimposing dozens of thin layers of acrylic paint onto the canvas. Layer by layer, the artist succeeds in creating an illusion of depth and light within the painting, immersing the viewer in a mysterious and seductive universe. Translucent, vibrant colours are juxtaposed and blended to create delicate yet bold and contrasting combinations. The material support is thus transformed into a poetic work of art full of emotion. “I aim to make paintings which are luminous, seductive, sensual, and atmospheric. I am fascinated in how the basic materials innate to the medium can be turned into something poetic; an object filled with light, feeling, and emotion. The struggle lies in attempting to reach that stage.”
