About the Item
Contrapuntal Painting (5/25) is a unique acrylic on canvas, gloss finish painting by contemporary artist James Lumsden, dimensions are 40 × 35 cm (15.7 × 13.8 in). The artwork is signed, sold unframed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
By drawing on a title from the world of music for this series, the artist establishes a deliberate analogy. “The paintings are not about music,” he explains, “but they aspire to the condition of music.” Rather than conveying meaning through language, the works seek an immediate, intuitive response, inviting viewers to experience them emotionally, much as one would a musical composition. In this sense, the paintings aim to generate feeling without relying on narrative or explanation.
James Lumsden’s abstract practice is driven by an exploration of light, colour, and spatial depth. His process involves the careful superimposition of dozens of thin layers of acrylic paint and gel gloss, each applied and manipulated with specialised tools to alternately obscure or reveal marks and traces. Through this gradual accumulation, Lumsden creates a compelling illusion of depth and luminosity, drawing the viewer into a contemplative and enigmatic visual field.
On the surface, gestures and chromatic marks intersect and overlap, yet they appear to emanate from within the canvas itself—what the artist describes as “an act of fixed movement.” Translucent, saturated hues are layered and blended to form compositions that are at once subtle and assertive, balancing harmony with contrast. This painterly method, which carefully negotiates chance and control, transforms the material support into a resonant, emotionally charged work.
Lumsden describes his intention as bringing something to life through sustained effort and engagement—something that carries its own sense of history and reflects the time invested in its making. He seeks to create paintings that are affirmative yet complex, imbued with light and darkness, tension and ambiguity. Open and suggestive, these works invite the viewer’s imagination to wander freely, to search, respond, and form personal interpretations.

James Lumsden’s abstract paintings seem to emanate an inner light and give the illusion of movement. His creative process involves superimposing dozens of thin layers of acrylic paint onto the canvas. Layer by layer, the artist succeeds in creating an illusion of depth and light within the painting, immersing the viewer in a mysterious and seductive universe. Translucent, vibrant colours are juxtaposed and blended to create delicate yet bold and contrasting combinations. The material support is thus transformed into a poetic work of art full of emotion. “I aim to make paintings which are luminous, seductive, sensual, and atmospheric. I am fascinated in how the basic materials innate to the medium can be turned into something poetic; an object filled with light, feeling, and emotion. The struggle lies in attempting to reach that stage.”
