The Point series consists of paintings created in James Lumsden’s studio on the Isle of Lewis. The island’s distinctive iridescent light and its dramatic landscapes—ranging from beaches and cliffs to moors, mountains, and lochs—serve as a key source of inspiration. This influence is evident in his use of opalescent pigments and a cooler colour palette. As the artist explains: “I do not actually wish to depict that landscape, but the sense of place, the sense of being there, it has permeated the work.”
Lumsden’s abstract paintings delve into the interplay of light, colour, and depth. His meticulous process involves layering dozens of thin coats of acrylic paint and gel gloss onto the canvas. Using specific tools, he manipulates this mixture to either conceal or reveal traces and gestures. Through this layered approach, he builds a compelling sense of spatial depth and illumination, drawing the viewer into a universe that feels both mysterious and seductive.
On the surface, colour traces and marks converge, yet they seem to rise from within the canvas—what the artist refers to as “an act of fixed movement.” Translucent and vibrant hues are skillfully juxtaposed and blended, resulting in compositions that are at once delicate, bold, and rich in contrast. This painting technique, balancing spontaneity with precision, transforms the canvas into an emotionally resonant, poetic work of art.
“I want to see something brought to life, struggled for, with a sense of having its own history, and reflective of the time spent on its creation. My aim is to create something positive and affirming which is filled with both light and darkness, contrasts, hesitations and contradictions – open paintings which allow the viewer’s imagination to search, wander or react at will.” – James Lumsden

James Lumsden’s abstract paintings seem to emanate an inner light and give the illusion of movement. His creative process involves superimposing dozens of thin layers of acrylic paint onto the canvas. Layer by layer, the artist succeeds in creating an illusion of depth and light within the painting, immersing the viewer in a mysterious and seductive universe. Translucent, vibrant colours are juxtaposed and blended to create delicate yet bold and contrasting combinations. The material support is thus transformed into a poetic work of art full of emotion. “I aim to make paintings which are luminous, seductive, sensual, and atmospheric. I am fascinated in how the basic materials innate to the medium can be turned into something poetic; an object filled with light, feeling, and emotion. The struggle lies in attempting to reach that stage.”
