About the Item
A vibrant and energetic abstract painting by a influential artist and professor in the San Francisco Bay Area art scene.
James McCray was born in the Bay Area in 1912. He studied art at UC Berkeley, and at the Barnes Foundation in Pennsylvania
McCray went on to teach all over the Bay Area, including the California School of Fine Arts, San Francisco Museum of Art, Santa Barbara College, and 40 years at UC Berkeley.
McCray also jurored many art shows in the Bay Area.
Throughout his life McCray exhibited his works and local institution including the Golden Gate International Exposition, 1939; San Francisco Art Association, 1939; California Palace of the Legion of Honor, 1945, 1948, 1950; the Art Institute of Chicago, 1947
1948; and the San Francisco Museum of Art.
This geometric work was painted by McCray in the 1960s, while teaching at UC Berkeley.
It is oil on stretched canvas, and is in great condition.

James McCray
James McCray taught at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco during the 1940s. He had solo and group exhibitions from 1935–66. Among them: Oakland Art Gallery in 1935, Golden Gate International Exposition in 1940, 57th Annual Painting and Sculpture Exhibition San Francisco Art Association at the San Francisco Museum of Art in 1937. Third-Fifth Winter Invitational, California Palace of the Legion of Honor in 1962, 1963, 1964. Salon de Realite, Paris and Institute of Creative Arts Grant in 1965–66.
