In this significant 1971 work, Oosterlynck moves beyond pure abstraction to pay homage to the literary legend of Don Quixote. The composition is a sophisticated "deconstruction" of the knight-errant: the vertical black forms resolve into the tall, lean figure of the hero, while the diagonal line to the right clearly suggests his lance. Stylised windmills feature in the background. Don Quixote was a deeply personal motif for Oosterlynck. He viewed the character not as a fool, but as a symbol of the "noble dreamer" and the struggle for personal truth—themes that resonated with his own journey as an artist. By placing the "knight" within a rigid, architectural grid of Flemish-inspired ochres and deep reds, Oosterlynck creates a tension between the romanticism of the legend and the structural discipline of 20th-century modernism. The composition is further enlivened by a 'stained glass effect' (vitrail), where Oosterlynck utilizes bold, lead-like black contours to partition vibrant cells of color—a technique that allows the light to appear as if it is radiating from within the canvas itself.
Born in Ypres, Oosterlynck remains one of Belgium’s most respected post-war artists. His work is a bridge between the structural discipline of Flemish tradition and the liberated color theory of the French school. Influenced by his time in the south of France, his paintings are celebrated for their "interior light" and a unique ability to find poetic structure in the everyday.
Oosterlynck’s work has been exhibited extensively throughout Europe and North America, and he is represented in numerous prestigious private and public collections.
Measuring 50 x 40 cm for the canvas alone, the painting is signed and dated at the lwer right. The overall framed size in a high quality Flemish style frame is 70 x 50 cm.
