About the Item
John Levee (American, 1924 - 2017) was an American abstract expressionist who studied at the California Institute of Art alongside Mark Rothko, Clifford Still, and Richard Diebenkorn, later continuing at the Académie Julian in Paris where he worked in Montparnasse and connected with Sam Francis. His early work drew inspiration from the New York School, including Kline, Motherwell, Pollock, and de Kooning. After experimenting with hard-edge geometric abstraction in the 1960s, he returned to a spontaneous, lyrical approach, often incorporating collage and gestural brushwork. The original Levee in this year’s Masters Exhibit is a vibrant oil on canvas, featuring dynamic brushstrokes and deep impasto, exemplifying his expressive intensity.

Dennis Eugene Norman Burton was a Canadian modernist who was born in Lethbridge, Ontario. He attended the Ontario College of Art from 1952 to 1956, and worked for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) as a graphic designer until 1960.
Inspired by a 1955 exhibition of the “Painters Eleven” at Toronto’s Hart House, as well as American Abstract Expressionist artists such as Robert Motherwell, Jack Tworkov, and Willem de Kooning, Burton shifted his focus toward abstraction in the mid-1950s.
