Jon Pestoni (b. 1969) is an American contemporary painter known for rethinking the possibilities of abstraction through a distinctly physical, process-driven approach. Born in New York and raised in Los Angeles, he studied at the University of California, Santa Cruz, later continuing his artistic development in the vibrant West Coast art communities of the 1990s and early 2000s. Immersed in a climate that encouraged experimentation with material, gesture, and form, Pestoni began to develop a vocabulary that merges the rigorous with the instinctive—an approach that remains central to his work today.
Pestoni’s style is rooted in abstraction, yet it often sidesteps the traditional expectations of expressive mark-making or formal purity. His canvases layer competing gestures and chromatic fields, allowing paint to assert itself as both surface and action. The resulting works convey tension between spontaneity and structure: broad sweeps collide with sharply defined edges, and vibrant color fields are disrupted by drags, veils, and erasures. Pestoni’s paintings often feel as though they record their own making—each layer a remnant of decisions made, undone, and remade.
The painting shown here exemplifies this dynamic interplay. A dominant mass of deep red paint sits at the center, interrupted by vertical passes of white that partially obscure and partially reveal what lies beneath.
