About the Item
Jongwang Lee's paintings challenge a dormant potential he believes lives within all humans. Inspired by Buddhist philosophies of space, Korean ideas of communication with the soul, and Eastern philosophies, Lee presents the concept of the "spacewomb"—an ideal world where the material and technological elements of the modern, physical world are escaped in a return to the spiritual haven of a womb. His paintings use a mixture of resin, oil paints, and pigments to create liquid forms: fluids, which for him represent humans, interacting in neural space. Lee's work combines contemporary qualities, like the bold colors and compositions of Pop art, with his personal lineage, through Eastern techniques such as Korean sumi brush painting. After experimenting with resin for over 20 years, Lee's latest work combines this material with acrylic paint in a process that produces three-dimensional, sculptural layers.
