About the Item
To trip and retrip on a piece of land, a surface, a support that sets up not a bounce but a billow, a soft surge, a reverberation where the ground is friendly, known, familiar and then questionable, transformed, odd, and unreliable.
To ponder figures, postulate objects, track, retract, probe, suggest the preposterous, erase, and efface. Then question, hold the brush, gesture, gesticulate, affirm, retract, and reaffirm the action of painting.
This show is an interrogation of my materials, methods, subjects and solutions. I pose and propose, set an object on a wave. Its ludicrous earthly references mock me. I let them sit there and proceed, drawn to yet avoiding the abyss of abstraction.

The Other
By Judith Berry
Located in Montreal, Quebec
The themes visited in this show stem from a desire to extend the vocabulary of my painting while forming a metaphor for the chaos of contemporary life.
The title, Escalade, has differing and complimentary functions in English and French. Continuing to paint, over a lengthening career, the medium poses more questions than answers. The title is a reference to my attempt to overcome these difficulties through the expansion of my painting language. The title also refers to the escalation of crises in the world at large. It is the larger picture in which I am a small person trying to make my way.
In a concrete sense, the title also refers to a strategy I have taken in a number of these paintings. That is, to re-examine very small paintings...

Cool
By Melinda Hackett
Located in New Orleans, LA
Hackett’s paintings defy popular convention. They are not figurative, decorative, representative, or even completely abstract. While it is hard to tie them to any one style or movement, they manage to be a part of all of them. Hackett’s work is influenced by pattern, midcentury design, art of indigenous peoples, and the art and craft movement, combined with a loose examination of the natural world. She creates a visual environment that is both recognizable yet strangely mysterious. While steeped in art history and influenced by a range of artists from Miro to Arthur Dove, Charles Burchfield, Agnes Pelton, Florine Stettheimer...
