About the Item
A soft and glowing 1960s hard edge painting by California artist, Jules Engel.
Jules Engel, (1909-2003), was a Hungarian born, American painter, sculptor, filmmaker, graphic artist, set designer, animator, film director, and educator.
Engel was the founding director of the experimental animation program at the California Institute of the Arts, where he taught for many years, and mentored multiple generations of animators.
Born in Budapest, Austria-Hungary, Engel immigrated to Chicago, then moved to Los Angeles when he was 17. In Los Angeles he attended the Chouinard Art Institute.
During his lifetime Engel exhibited a many of the finest art institutions in the country, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the De Young Museum in San Francisco, CA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Walker Art Center.
This work is an oil on stretched canvas, and is housed in a contemporary frame.
The work is signed by the artist, and dated, 1968.
