“Mirage II” is a serene abstract that distills horizon, atmosphere, and light into pure color and texture. Bands of turquoise, misty white, and soft aqua drift horizontally across the canvas, creating a quiet sense of distance and suspended time. Holt’s signature use of layered oil glazes and subtle surface markings gives the work a luminous, almost meditative quality, inviting the viewer into a landscape that feels both real and dreamlike.

Katheryn Holt paints memory. Her abstract paintings are infused with half-remembered landscapes. She has been documenting her interior and exterior life through painting since she was 4 years old. Growing up on Hermosa Beach, Los Angeles, in the 1950s and 1960s, her frame of visual references was formed both by horizon lines extending across a seemingly endless Pacific Ocean and the cultural influences of post-World War 2 America. Holt studied painting at the University of Southern California and graduated with a B.F.A. from the Art Center College of Design. She taught at New York’s School of Visual Arts, has won awards from the Society of Illustrators, and was included in American Illustrator and Outstanding American Illustrators. She has exhibited in many solo and group shows, including eight shows at Tria Gallery, New York; national juried competitions including the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, the Santa Cruz Art League, and the Bolinas Museum; and was featured in a recent display in the windows of Saks Fifth Avenue in San Francisco. She won first place at the American Pastel Society and is part of the permanent collection in the Kunst Museum, Hollfeld, Germany. Her work has been shown in New York, Germany, Texas, Georgia, Colorado, and California. Solo Exhibitions "Desta at the Depot,” Mill Valley, CA, 2023

"Unearthed" is part of my Tapestry series of semi abstract paintings that explore the simplification of shape and texture in the places I have visited over the Summer months. Tapestry-like landscapes with bold colour blocks and a warming palette are evident as the seasons change. Muted shades of teal, chocolate and moss with undulating textural layers. Change always sparks new ideas.

Summer Hope, Abstract Style Contemporary Artwork, Blue Colourfield Painting

Summer Hope [2021]
Please note that insitu images are purely an indication of how a piece may look
Summer Hope is part of a series of paintings made in 2021 inspired by early morning walks on the fell landscape. Her expressive paintings are very much influenced by the idea of a new day representing a new beginning, a hopeful emotional moment. This searching for hope was undoubtedly a subconscious response to an extraordinary time and her paintings celebrate the joy and freedom of being in the landscape. Jill is inspired by the landscape of the North East and most of her work is based on an ancient mining landscape called Cockfield Fell where she walks nearly every day. Her atmospheric paintings are a result of her exploration of the interplay between what is seen and what is felt about the landscape. She uses elements of what she sees and combines these with her imagination to create her paintings. She is fascinated by the Fell’s strange, other-worldly, abstract shapes defined by the morning shadows...
